There's something magical about creating with your hands. For years, I admired handmade items, made the old fashioned way. Each piece having it's own unique story to pass on.
I had a successful business for years selling new and used screenprinting equipment. In 2006 I decided to dive into making jewelry.
When I first sat down with a small set of tools and materials, I'll admit I was nervous. I started working on an old sewing table and a few books about making beaded jewelry. Just making eye hooks and ear wires was a challenge back then.
I can't remember my first piece, I am sure it didn't sell. I did do a few markets that sold some earrings, a few necklaces, and stretchy bracelets. Friends were encouraging and I did get some sales from strangers. But I wanted to make something a little different than your average jewelry.
This is where I learned patience. Next I learned wire wrapping. Back then there were a few good magazines out that had great tutorials. Wire wrapping was challenging and I think I liked making rings the best. Once I was brave enough to try a torch, things really started to take shape. Finally I could create the artistic scenic type jewelry I dreamed about.
It has taken me years to perfect my craft. Most of it enjoyable, while some of it frustrating.
Now looking ahead I will continue learning and growing, creating lots of one of a kind pieces. Next blog article I will share how I decided to open my paintings to the public.
